Sterling, Virginia
As the location of our US headquarters, Open Arms has sought to bless the children in our own backyard, much as we do overseas. One particular example of this was our ministry partnership with Sully Elementary School & one local church.
Project Years: 2014-2017
Geographic setting: Suburban
Language: English & Spanish
Local Church Partner: Sterling Park Baptist Church (SPBC)
Challenges: Cultural, language, and social assimilation, literacy, poverty
Interesting tidbits: Over four (4) years Open Arms and SPBC partnered with Sully Elementary School in Sterling Park. Sully is a Federal Title I eligible school due to the high number of children living at or near the poverty line. At the end of those four years, SPBC shifted their ministry to Sterling Elementary School, and another local church stepped into Sully to continue the work begun there.
Approach:
- School-Church partnership: Strengthening community bonds by blessing the school children with tutoring, a book fair, family food bank access, and recreational activities.
Open Arms is currently looking for new partners in our US Headquarters Region, so that we might continue to bless those close to home.
