The Beauty of Mission Teams
Done Right
I have heard, and even from my own mouth a time or two, people question the wisdom of sending short term teams to work alongside foreign missionaries.
While I cannot speak to the experience of other mission organizations, I can tell you that short term teams have been a vital part of the strategy of Open Arms Worldwide to mobilize God’s people to reach at-risk children and youth at home and around the world. Short term teams encourage and breathe life into our full-time missionaries, draw crowds of curious children and youth who otherwise might not come and hear the good news of Jesus, and bring attention to our mission both in the host country as well as here at home.
One perfect example is the team from our partners at Derwood Bible Church (https://derwoodbiblechurch.org/) that just returned from a mission to our Pantanal Base in Aquidauana, Brazil.
The Derwood team, led by youth Pastor Mike Speer and Senior Pastor Colin Seager, joined a team of Open Arms Agents of Hope and volunteers to conduct 5 days of evangelistic day camps in Aquidauana and in two different indigenous villages, as well as to break ground on a new, expanded base for OAW that will serve to train and send the next generation of missionaries further into the Pantanal and, Lord willing, into the neighboring countries of Bolivia and Paraguay.
Our staff of missionaries are able to mobilize and equip teams like these because we have an amazing team of supporters from all over the world who believe in this mission and invest sacrificially in the lives of young people. Their generosity helps make stories like these possible and we are thankful for each of them.
